In 2001, the Abingdon District began serving the Costa Rica Methodist Church in north central city of Santa Rosa de Pocosol about twenty-five miles south of the Nicaraguan border. The church's mission in Santa Rosa is to minister to those in need of Christ's healing grace, particularly Nicaraguan immigrants who face social and economic hardship because of their limited education, nationality and color.
The district built its first church in the nearby village of San Bosco, where church meetings were being
held in a makeshift shed. That church was finished and, in 2004, a new church was begun in the nearby community of Santa María. Where aging members of the Methodist Church are finding it more and more difficult to make the two mile walk to the church in Santa Rosa.
The following churches have participated in the Costa Rica Mission Project: Aldersgate (Bristol), Anderson Street (Bristol), First United (Marion), Mountain View (Abingdon), Mountain View (Chilhowie), Reynolds Memorial (Bristol), State Street (Bristol). In 2004, Emory and Henry College joined the project and witnessed to hundreds of youth in Costa Rica.
We need your support by providing volunteers to join our teams as well as financial support for construction cost and to help with travel expenses for those who cannot afford the cost but have been called to serve. Please fill out the following and return it by mail to the district office.
