Why do we call it Good Friday when Jesus died on that day?
Jesus was nailed to the cross on Friday and died after about six hours. Crucifixion was an awful way to die. Only the very worst criminals were crucified. We know that Jesus was perfect and sinless -- he did not do anything wrong, and yet he died on the cross. What is good about that?
It certainly seems like we ought to call it "Bad Friday" or maybe even "Terrible Friday!"
By calling the day Jesus died, "Good Friday," we remember that the death of Jesus is not the end of the story. We know that the resurrection is coming. We look forward to the empty tomb of Sunday morning and the rejoicing that will occur. We recognize that God's love for us is truly good!
By sending Jesus to die for us, we see just how very much God loves us!
