February 2004 - Faith FAQ
What is worship and why is it important to me?
Worship means "worth-ship." We worship the One who is worthy or deserving of our respect, honor and praise. That is God! Worship is a time when we focus on experiencing God and praising God. Worship is:
- A meeting between God and God's people
- Communication between God and us
- The most important thing we do!
- What we were created for!
- Active -- that means we participate -- we don't just sit there!
Why do we worship? Is it just because our parents make us?
- We worship out of thankfulness for all God has done for us.
- We worship because God has asked us to.
- We worship because it helps us connect with God in deep and meaningful ways.
Sometimes we get this all mixed up. We think that the purpose of worship is to be entertained, to learn, to be inspired or to get together with friends.... All of those things may happen when we worship, but those are NOT the reasons we worship. Worship should be focused on GOD, not us! If you remember that when you are in worship, or when you are helping to lead worship, you will get it right!
